A 24-hour fitness center will take over a vacant building at Sierra Pavilions, the shopping plaza in Clovis located at Shaw and Cole avenues.

The 35,000-square-foot commercial space formerly housed Big Lots, a discount store that closed two years ago. The new tenant, national gym chain Chuze Fitness, received approval from the Clovis Planning Commission to convert the vacant space into a fitness facility open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The gym comes with a 1,000-square-foot cinema, where members can bike, run, or walk while watching movies on a big screen, according to the business plan.

Besides cardio, strength-training and weight-bearing equipment, as well as group fitness classes, the facility provides an indoor park-like green turf area where members can gather with friends to stretch, warm up, or do a full-body workout.

Highlights also include a traditional sauna space and zero-gravity chairs that help the body to relax and recover. Another 1,670 square feet of space will be dedicated to a Kids Club, which will provide staff-supervised activities to kids in the mornings and evenings when they accompany their parents to the gym.

Jon Eckman, chief development officer for the chain, told the planning commission that the timeline for full opening and operation is planned for early 2028.

This will be Chuze Fitness’s second location in the area. The brand’s Fresno location on 3684 W. Shaw Ave. is set to open later this year, according to its website.

Clovis already has a 24-hour gym, Planet Fitness, on 634 Shaw Ave.

Chuze Fitness wrote in its business proposal that it’s expanding operational hours in locations across California to serve a larger population who work non-traditional schedules, such as police officers, firefighters, and hospital workers.

At other business centers, the chain says it has found that less property crime occurs because the area is more active and monitored. In the past several years, the extended hours have been carried out in other locations in residential areas with no noise issues, according to the proposal.

“There would be a short window of time, kind of between midnight and 4 a.m. range, when it would not be staffed and key entry only,” Eckman said. “Of course, 24-hour surveillance inside of the facility.”
